Sruti Magazine

Sruti is a monthly magazine published in Chennai, India, that focuses on the performing arts, particularly Indian music and dance. Established in 1983 by N. Pattabhiraman, who returned to India after working abroad, the magazine aimed to combine a strong command of English with a commitment to thoughtful critique and open discussion. In its early days, Sruti faced financial challenges, as Pattabhiraman preferred to build a subscriber base rather than rely on loans, and corporate support was limited. After Pattabhiraman passed away, the magazine encountered some difficulties but has been successfully managed by a dedicated team since 2014. In 2006, it was acquired by the Sanmar Group. In 2011, journalist S. Muthiah acknowledged Sruti as the leading publication in India dedicated to classical music and dance.
