The boat cruises slowly down the Golden Horn. In front of us, the minarets of the city’s Ottoman mosques are bathed in rose pink. As we get closer to the city centre, the muezzins’ calls to prayer sound out from the speakers attached to each of the city’s mosques, their voices mingling as they echo across the water. Istanbul is a city unlike anywhere else. There are so many things to do in Istanbul that it can be tricky to know where to start.

Venice with kids is always a good idea. It’s hard to imagine a city more thrilling to visit with children than Venice. This, after all, is a city on the water where even the ambulances and rubbish trucks are boats. Most of the buildings are palaces and there are winged lions and dragons around every corner. Venice is a joy to explore with children. Wander down the less touristy backstreets and you’ll find tiny canals and little bridges to run across.

There are times and places in your life that live on in the imagination long after you’ve left. If you’ve lived somewhere, that place becomes a part of who you are. It will always be yours, no matter how much time has passed since you left. These are the places that feel like home whenever you return. And for me, one of those places is Paris.

The best Christmas markets for children are filled with old-fashioned toys, craft stalls and exciting activities. If you really want to get into the Christmas spirit with the whole family, there’s nothing better than a visit to one of the traditional Christmas markets in Northern Europe. Most of these markets have changed little over the centuries and you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped back into Christmas Past as you wander the medieval streets and look up at the towers of the Gothic cathedrals.

On a sunny day, the isle of Mull is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Single-track roads zigzag around the island past lochs, mountains, white sandy beaches and tiny harbours. Sea eagles screech and soar above your head and Highland cows stare at you from beneath their shaggy fringes.

What have you missed most about London over lockdown? Our family has missed the castles and palaces. We’ve missed the grandeur and the history, the fascinating stories that you find out when you’re visiting a historic building. We’ve missed walking down the street and seeing some of the most famous places in the world. We were desperate to come back to London and explore some of those places we hadn’t visited in years.

It’s hard to beat Snowdonia for a family holiday. The National Park in North Wales is one of those places that seems to have it all: drop-dead gorgeous beaches, some of the best castles in the UK and mountain scenery that will take your breath away. There are so many things to do in Snowdonia with kids that you’ll be hard pushed to fit it all in. In just a few days you could climb a mountain, visit a castle, swim in the sea and have a picnic in one of Britain’s most beautiful gardens.
