For Southern California surfers, many of these secret spots required ignoring "No Trespassing" private property or "Restricted Area" military base signs. Jack McCoy, the man who helped shape the way we see surfing on film, has died at 76. Born in Los Angeles in 1948, he was the son of a radio and TV host. In 1954, his family moved to Hawaii. There, he traded Hollywood lights for Pacific swells and learned to ride waves as a young boy. As a preteen in the early 1960s, Jack worked hanging movie handbills on telephone poles. By 1970, he had moved to Australia and picked up a still camera. His early photos soon appeared in Tracks magazine.
