It all comes back to muscle memory, and with swimming, building muscle memory—as well as strengthening the muscles themselves to improve strength, speed, and endurance—is the central physical aspect of the sport.

    The official trailer for the 1958 Alfred Hitchcock film “Vertigo” opens with a visit to a dictionary to describe this peculiar sensation. The definition supplied reads: “VERTIGO: ver’-ti-go—A feeling of dizziness… a swimming in the head… figuratively a state in which all things seem to be engulfed in a whirlpool of terror.” If you’ve ever experienced vertigo, you know this swimming-head feeling is no good. But can actual swimming cause it?

    SARASOTA, Fla. — U.S. Masters Swimming on Thursday announced locations and dates for its 2026 and 2027 Spring National Championships and its 2026 Summer National Championship. The 2026 USMS Spring National Championship will take place April 30–May 3, 2026, at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina, and the 2026 USMS Summer National Championship will be Aug. 5–9, 2026, at the North Natomas Aquatics Complex in Sacramento, California.

    Two USMS members will be part of the Masters International Swimming Hall of Fame’s 2024 induction class, the International Swimming Hall of Fame announced Friday. Puget Sound Masters member Charlotte Davis and Sarasota Sharks Masters member Diann Uustal were part of the eight-member class. They’ll be inducted during the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore next summer alongside the 2025 induction class. Davis and Uustal are being recognized for their outstanding swimming accomplishments.

    Strong, flexible shoulders are the quintessential characteristic of a good swimmer. But the shoulder, a particularly agile joint that allows you to move your arm through several planes of motion, can be fragile. Many swimmers know all too well how easy it can be to injure a shoulder, especially with the repetitive movements required in our sport.
