While the overall level of deadly violence across Syria remained almost exactly the same as the week prior — with 88 deaths recorded this week, and 87 the week before — the proportion of deaths caused by unexploded ordinance declined significantly, from 30% last week to 19% this week. In other words, the frequency and deadliness of armed and military attacks and actions rose notably over the past seven days, particularly in the form of targeted killings, as well as kidnaps and executions.

Syria’s transitional government was announced late on March 29, in an inauguration ceremony at the People’s Palace in Damascus. The 23-member cabinet contains 9 ‘independent’ ministers, 7 former members of the Salvation Government and 5 people who previously held senior government positions under Bashar al-Assad, pre-2011.

The level of violence in Syria returned to the average seen prior to the March 7 surge in killings on the coast — with 87 violent deaths reported across the country over the seven-day reporting period (March 18-25). Thirty percent of those deaths were caused by unexploded ordinance (UXO), which remains a persistent and very significant threat to civilian life in at least eight of Syria’s 14 governorates.
