Exeter City Council has launched a consultation on proposed taxi fare increases, with members of the public invited to give feedback until 13 July. The move follows a request from both of the city’s Hackney Carriage Associations. Exeter last approved a fare rise in 2022. The proposals suggest raising the starting fare for standard daytime journeys between 7am and 7pm from £2.70 to £3.80. This is a 41% increase.

Dozens of Hackney Carriage and Private Hire licences were suspended or revoked over the past three months in Huntingdonshire, with major vehicle defects and medical non-compliance among the most common causes. A report presented to the Licensing and Protection Committee on 5 June 2025 revealed that from March to May this year, a total of 37 enforcement actions were taken against drivers, vehicles and operators. Of these, 27 were immediate vehicle suspensions.

Writing in TAXI newspaper, Paul Brennan expressed frustration that while licensed taxi drivers in London continue to face challenges with access and recognition, city authorities in Manchester and Liverpool have taken meaningful steps to involve and support their own trades.

Taxi and private hire vehicle drivers in Bury who fail to give consent for background checks risk immediate licence suspension, following a decision by the Licensing and Safety Committee. The committee has agreed to give licensing officers the power to suspend Hackney Carriage and private hire drivers’ licences if drivers have not granted permission for Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks.
