The Armidale Express

The Armidale Express

The Armidale Express is a newspaper that serves the city of Armidale, located in the Northern Tablelands of New South Wales. It is published three times a week and reaches an audience of over 10,000 readers in the surrounding areas, including Uralla, Guyra, and Walcha. The newspaper started out as The Armidale Express and New England General Advertiser, with its first publication dating back to 1856. Originally, it was issued bi-weekly until 1929. It was founded by William Hipgrave and Walter Craigie, who were also the first editors. The Express was a platform for them to share their political opinions. Although they sold the paper to Owen Gorman for a short time in 1858, they took back ownership the following year. In the 1890s, the editorial team of the Express was initially against the push for Federation.
