Immersion, a buzz word in the realm of virtual entertainment, has been the holy grail of cinematic technologies for more than half a century. Cinerama, a film display system involving three synchronized projectors and a screen wide enough to encompass the viewer’s field of vision, was introduced in 1952. This is Cinerama, a film made to present the system, contains a rollercoaster sequence that is a continuous point of view shot taken from the frontmost seat on the coaster.

Born in Dresden in 1932, in 1962 he moves across the borders to West Germany and bases himself in Dusseldorf. Since then, Richter starts using magazines, brochures, catalogues, photographs, frames of films as sources for his painting and quite immediately the procedure of blurring appears, something that, in time, will become a signature for his work and a metaphor for oblivion. As if time kept depositing insubstantial layers, veils on objects, human beings, memories.

Dietz: Atlanta has never been known as much of a contemporary art town…or any kind of art town, for that matter. Why on earth are you coming to Atlanta? Rooks: I was just departing my previous position at Haunch of Venison where I served as Director of Artist Relations and I realized that I missed playing a role in a mission driven organization rather than a commercial one. That’s where I really belong and the High Museum was at the top of the list of mission-driven arts organizations.

When you encounter a work of art for the first time, what part of you comes into play --- is it a more intuitive or analytical experience? How do you judge or experience the quality or greatness of the work? I think the experience of seeing something new or for the first time relies on intuition and can be somewhat physical. I generally have a visceral reaction to works and can tell pretty quickly if the work is for me.
