The Baxley News-Banner
The Baxley News-Banner holds the distinction of being the oldest business in Baxley, having been established in 1884 by Warren P. Ward from Douglas, initially named the Baxley Banner. Starting in 1885, it became the primary source for most official county announcements. In 1902, the Baxley Banner acquired the Appling County News from A.M. Cool, leading to its current name, The Baxley News-Banner. In 1940, the publication expanded further by purchasing the Baxley Herald from Carr McLemore.

I became annoyed last week with some of our state representation under the Gold Dome. State senators attempted to slide some legislation in at the last minute that would continue to weaken our rights to know about our government. Seventeen republicans and two democrats sponsored a bill which seems to push an agenda that would make it where you and I know less about our government and its interactions.

You could be in trouble if you drive a Tesla, as extremists (maybe they should even be considered domestic terrorists) are running loose in the country attacking Tesla drivers and dealers over the good work Elon Musk has accomplished for taxpayers. In what alternate universe does it make sense to attack someone for driving a vehicle that was designed by a man who is trying to help our country get back on the right path?

Long lasting impactsI could lambast Democrats for their missteps last week, but I’ll take a break from politics for now. I think most of you witnessed the same thing I did last week during President Trump’s address to congress, and also the vote banning men from women’s sports. All I can say is, shameful. Enough of that, I said I wasn’t going to talk politics, right? Last week I had a conversation with a friend about the lasting impacts from COVID. Have you experienced any long-term effects?

When I was young, growing up on my Mom and Dad’s small farm, we raised various animals including hogs. I am grateful for the upbringing I received from my parents and other family members like my Uncle Wayne Jones. They all had a strong work ethic and set a good example. When raising hogs there are certain things you need to do at certain ages of the piglet’s young life (I’ll keep it PG). We’d have a good time trying to catch the pigs around the hog lot.

It is hard work for us men to remember the important dates. Last week was a true test for us guys, as we had to try our best to come up with the perfect gift for our wife or girlfriend for Valentine’s Day. If we get it wrong, we could end up sleeping with Pluto in the proverbial doghouse. I did well this year. I actually planned a few weeks ahead and contacted a friend who just happens to own a flower shop. I gave her specific instructions to send my beauty a dozen roses with stargazer lilies.
