BY SHERI TRUSTYPORT CLINTON – There may be only one known Medal of Honor recipient in Ottawa County, but local residents are making sure he is not forgotten. Civil War hero Lewis C. Shepard, who is buried at Lakeview Cemetery, earned the Medal of Honor for bravery under enemy attack during an assault of a Confederate fort on the coast of North Carolina on Jan. 15, 1865. Shepard, a Union sailor, advanced through heavy Confederate enemy fire, pushing bravely through fear, danger and the unknown.

BY SHERI TRUSTYPORT CLINTON – On Easter Day, 2015, Kathy Jo Schweitzer and her grandson, Justin Tyler Furgurson, brainstormed together and created a program that has impacted hundreds of people across Ottawa County. This Easter, Simple Gestures will celebrate ten years of charitable giving. In the last decade, Simple Gestures has processed the donations of dozens of generous contributors, making 215 distributions of 39,644 items. The process is, of course, simple.

BY SHERI TRUSTYLAKESIDE – In 1875, Lakeside Chapel was constructed as a place of worship for early Lakesiders. This year, the Lakeside Heritage Society (LHS) will honor the church’s long history by returning the building, now a museum called Historic Heritage Hall, to its early glory.
