The Chanticleer
Since 1934, students at Jacksonville State have been producing The Chanticleer, a publication that highlights events and topics relevant to the campus community. Initially called The Teacola and later The Collegian, the publication adopted its current name in 1967. Today, a dedicated team of four student editors, along with numerous volunteer writers and photographers, manage The Chanticleer. While it is still referred to as a newspaper, "The Chanty" has transitioned to a digital-first platform, connecting with students and the wider JSU community through online content and social media. The name "Chanticleer" is inspired by a recurring rooster figure found in medieval fables from France, Britain, the Netherlands, and Germany, and has appeared in literature as a name for roosters. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the term comes from Old French words meaning "to sing clearly."
