HENDERSON — The Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce held its bimonthly Nonprofit Engagement Meeting on Tuesday. United Way of Vance and Granville counties fundraise from local businesses and in turn administer those funds out to local nonprofits. Contributions to UWGC have been on the up and up since 2000, slumping slightly every now and again, from around $362,000, to $412,000 in 2023. The COVID-19 pandemic made a big hit on that figure, but the climb has continued even so.

HENDERSON — Discussions and decisions on what to do with taxpayer dollars abounded at the Board of Commissioners’ regular Monday meeting. County Manager Renee Perry presented the proposed budget near the meeting’s end. The proposed general fund is $64.3 million, $3.5 million or roughly 6% higher than last year’s. “Numerous unforeseen costs” contributed to the increase in the budget.

Since Monday, the Henderson Fire Department has been hard at work burning down 13 blighted properties the city marked for destruction. Around noon Tuesday, the crew watched as the empty windows of a shotgun shack belched flame and smoke.
