Nonprofits talk funding at Farmers Market

HENDERSON — The Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce held its bimonthly Nonprofit Engagement Meeting on Tuesday. United Way of Vance and Granville counties fundraise from local businesses and in turn administer those funds out to local nonprofits. Contributions to UWGC have been on the up and up since 2000, slumping slightly every now and again, from around $362,000, to $412,000 in 2023. The COVID-19 pandemic made a big hit on that figure, but the climb has continued even so.
Commissioners receive proposed budget

HENDERSON — Discussions and decisions on what to do with taxpayer dollars abounded at the Board of Commissioners’ regular Monday meeting. County Manager Renee Perry presented the proposed budget near the meeting’s end. The proposed general fund is $64.3 million, $3.5 million or roughly 6% higher than last year’s. “Numerous unforeseen costs” contributed to the increase in the budget.
Burning blight

HENDERSON — There are plenty of opinions on how to deal with blight. But sometimes, a little fire does the trick. Since Monday, the Henderson Fire Department has been hard at work burning down 13 blighted properties the city marked for destruction. Around noon Tuesday, the crew watched as the empty windows of a shotgun shack belched flame and smoke.

And one attendee, financier-turned-graphic designer Tasha Fritz, heard that there was a need for a repository for local resources, a central spot to link up both them and the people that need them. Before the event ended, Fritz had bought a domain and by the time the sun set, the website was live.
Pet-A-Palooza draws crowds

HENDERSON — Pets and their companions descended on the old Boyd dealership on Saturday for the third biannual Pet-A-Palooza. There were all sorts of activities to do and places to shop — a good two dozen merchants of handmade wares stood on either side of the main drag and six food trucks kept folks fed. Staff from Vance County Animal Shelter came out with a mobile adoption center — around midday they reported no adoptions, but some interest from attendees.
Proposed bill cuts $10 million from KLRWS expansion

HENDERSON — House Bill 74 passed the North Carolina Senate on Thursday and is nearly ready to be presented to Gov. Josh Stein. If ratified, it would reallocate $10 million meant for the Kerr Lake Regional Water Expansion project. Those dollars were allocated in October of 2023 to the City of Oxford, one of three of the KLRWS’ shareholders, for the project that is set to double the system’s capacity from 10 to 20 million gallons per day.
Causey rails against proposed SHIIP cuts

HENDERSON — One item in the proposed budget North Carolina Senate Republicans passed earlier this month is cutting all state funds appropriated for the Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program. SHIIP is a service that assists senior citizens with Medicaid — from enrollment, to drug plans and supplements — all for free. Many retirees are on fixed incomes, mind.
Irish company looking to buy acreage at HVIP

HENDERSON — After a closed session Monday afternoon, the Vance County Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously to approve an offer from Linde Gas and Equipment PLC for three acres of land located at Henderson-Vance Industrial Park. For the moment, the price tag for Linde is $135,000. District 7 Commissioner Tommy Hester made the motion to accept the offer on Monday, with a second from District 4 Commissioner Dan Brummitt. The company appears to be interested in the shell building as well.
Future leaders graduate
