HENDERSON — Fifteen years after it was founded, Servants on Site is still going strong. Such servants, teenagers from grades 6-12, came from near and far to take part in Rebuilding Hope’s annual Servants on Site Youth Summer Mission Camp. This reporter stopped by two of the nine worksites up and down the county, the first on Boddie Street, where around eight teenaged volunteers, largely girls, were hard at work nailing down shingles under the supervision of crew chief Randy Carroll.

HENDERSON — A closure earlier this year left Vance County with a new piece of real estate. Around six months back, Boca Raton, Florida-based bedding company Keeco LLC announced it would close its distribution center and manufactory on Comfort Drive, just off Ross Mill Road via an NC WARN Notice, which companies are required to file with the state should they announce closures or layoffs of 50 or more people.

HENDERSON — The county commissioners met Monday afternoon and, in short order, adopted its budget for fiscal year 2025-26. “I just feel that this budget is an increase of almost 11%, on the backs of our tax-paying citizens,” said District 4 Commissioner Dan Brummitt. “At some point, we have to look at cutting expenses rather than generating new revenues. “Hopefully, this coming year, we’ll do something different.”The budget passed 4-2, with Brummitt and another commissioner cast dissenting votes.

Sang, danced, played the carillon — no matter how, folks made music. “I didn’t realize how much music meant to me,” said Mayor Melissa Elliott before delivering her proclamation declaring June 21 as Make Music Day, “until I really needed the music to mean something.”She praised Vance County Arts Council Director Alice Sallins, who stood nearby, for her longtime career as a devotee of and promoter of the arts in Henderson.
