The Front Row Center

The Front Row Center

Why did I start Usher Nonsense and then Front Row Center? In my view, theatre is one of the top reasons to celebrate being human. I love stepping out of my home and into a dark theatre full of strangers to watch talented actors perform. It’s all about the inspiration for me. I willingly let myself be guided through any story they wish to tell, as long as they keep me engaged. If I attend a show that doesn’t quite hit the mark, I feel compelled to steer you away from it. I don’t want you to waste your time at a performance that doesn’t live up to expectations. I’ll do whatever it takes to redirect you – I’ll block the entrance, swing from the rafters, or even shout “FIRE!” just to keep you from feeling let down. I’ll suggest you do something more worthwhile with your evening, like saving your money for a dinner with a friend you haven’t caught up with in ages or taking a stroll with your dog, child, or partner. Even going to bed early is a better choice than attending a mediocre show. I admit it: I have high standards when it comes to ushering and theatre experiences.

By Holli HarmsThe Hot Sardines is one of the best old-time jazz bands I have enjoyed seeing. Many of you may know them from their sold-out Joe’s Pub shows, and they bring that magic to the Birdland stage and making the room come alive from the first note. They are a celebration of the music of the early 20th century and a celebration of us, where we’ve been and how that relates to where we are now. Their music is rejoicing in life, in sound, in stories.

By Sarah DownsI honestly don’t quite know how to describe Bear Grease. It’s a musical theater / night club act / low comedy / video show all jumbled into  one. It has some really fun, but it’s overly ambitious, disorganized and definitely niche.

By Tulis McCallPrince Faggot is a beguiling tragicomedy.  “Beguiling” – I don’t often use that word, but it is the one that surfaced. Jordan Tannahill‘s play is a dense tapestry of wonder, imagination, sexuality, humor and stinging observation. That’s just for starters.

By Holli HarmsWhat is the truth of war? The bottom line of it? People, average, everyday humans kill other average, everyday humans for a belief, a cause, a hope for a better world. That, better, of course, is always subjective, based on the wants and beliefs of the side you are on. The belief that particular members of the world are inferior, that a certain political stance overrides another. Often, the beliefs center on racism, sexism, and separatism of the other.

By Tulis McCallThere is a lot of star power treading the boards in New York Theatre these days.  Jean Smart is completing the circle by adding her superb performance as Isabelle Scutley A/K/A Izzy.  SUPERB. The time is 1989, eons before the MeToo movement, in Mansfield, Louisiana that is located as far away from Feminism as you can get and still be on the planet.   Mansfield is so far away from just about everything that it is on the cutting edge of nothing.
