The Front Row Center

The Front Row Center

Why did I start Usher Nonsense and then Front Row Center? In my view, theatre is one of the top reasons to celebrate being human. I love stepping out of my home and into a dark theatre full of strangers to watch talented actors perform. It’s all about the inspiration for me. I willingly let myself be guided through any story they wish to tell, as long as they keep me engaged. If I attend a show that doesn’t quite hit the mark, I feel compelled to steer you away from it. I don’t want you to waste your time at a performance that doesn’t live up to expectations. I’ll do whatever it takes to redirect you – I’ll block the entrance, swing from the rafters, or even shout “FIRE!” just to keep you from feeling let down. I’ll suggest you do something more worthwhile with your evening, like saving your money for a dinner with a friend you haven’t caught up with in ages or taking a stroll with your dog, child, or partner. Even going to bed early is a better choice than attending a mediocre show. I admit it: I have high standards when it comes to ushering and theatre experiences.

A FREEKY INTRODUCTION – Don’t let the title fool you.  The only thing freeky about “A Freeky Introduction” is the astonishing amount of love, smarts and hope that one person – NSangou Njikam (Freeky Dee) – can fit into one tight 85 minutes, never mind one theatre.  With the aid of his DJ and sidekick DJ Monday Blue Njikam leaps onto the stage and into our hearts.

By Tulis McCallLunar Eclipse is a mild investigation into a decades old marriage that still has some mystery left in the saddlebags.  Reed Birney as George and Lisa Emery as Em imbue every ounce of their considerable talents into their characters.  It is not quite enough to make this production soar. Donald Margulies has written a story that, at first glance, is chock-a-block full of metaphors and symbolism. Set in Western Kentucky, it is the night of a lunar eclipse.

By Tulis McCallRed Bull’s “Imaginary Invalid” is a perfection of a confection that will soothe the blues we are all experiencing.  I PROMISE it will make you laugh.  It made me laugh, and I am not a laugher.  I am an observer who, when something is funny, often makes a mental not to that effect.  But laugh out loud?  Not so much.  Wasn’t I suprised to be one of the people who nearly barked.

By Holli HarmsThe ambience in the room was charged with excitement, anticipation of not knowing what to expect, and hopeful wonderment of the promise of free form expression. The theme of the evening, if there was one, “Let’s See What Happens.” And what happened at the New York Irish Center was a fusion of Irish and Brazilian Samba that created an earth-shattering beauty that is our essence, our deepest truth.

By David WalersIt’s dance: graceful leaping, pulling, carrying, lifting, bodies beautifully twisted and arched in space. It’s circus: gravity-defying balancing, juggling, magic, suspense. It’s theater: three friends live together in a small space (30″x30″x7′); one finds another place to live and decides to move.
