This post might be too long for email—if it cuts off, you can open it in the app or on the web. I’m writing to you from Villa Lena—a lovely hidden gem and artist residence in the Tuscan countryside (with excellent views, even from the bathroom).

I’ve always gravitated towards people older than me. I’m nearly 36, and recently I’ve noticed that most of the people I spend time with—or send voice notes to—are either older or younger than me, but rarely my own age. Apart from a handful of friends from school and university, I’m surrounded by intergenerational friendships—a theme that also appears in my most recent novel. Last Summer I met up with a friend in NYC who is 60. I went to stay with a friend last year who is 62.

Table For One, my new novel, is out now—in all good book stores. Here is a little three-day diary in case you are curious as to what my publication week has looked like. <3 My recommended retailer is Bookshop.org. 23rd April 2025The day before publication day, I felt jittery and strange. I felt this enormous sense of ‘what have I done??’ and not in a good way. I had just spent four years of my life (on and off) making something that had absolutely zero guaranteed outcome.

I. My new novel comes out in four days—and underneath all the excitement of publication day, organising my book tour and the sold-out Substack dinner!!—another feeling has been bubbling way quietly. I feel a weird sadness that my book is not going to be mine anymore. Creative grief.Saying goodbye to a project that has kept me company over the past few years. It was my constant thing, keeping me busy, allowing me to escape.

I love recommending books. I am reading a lot at the moment, mainly because I recently read 70+ books in a few months as a judge for the Women’s Prize (wipes brow), and I’ve somehow managed to carry that momentum into my personal reading. I also bought a dedicated reading chair recently (as regular readers will know). I refuse to have brain rot.

This year, for me, is all about connection and community over and above everything else. I’ve decided, instead of a traditional launch party, to host a special dinner for my Substack readers to celebrate my new novel Table For One!I’ve partnered with the brilliant brains behind HER TABLE: a community event series founded by two friends of 20+ years, Emily and Ella, who bonded over their love of food, hosting and bringing people together.

My new novel Table For One is out in three weeks (in the UK)! You can order a special signed copy from Phlox books here. This week I met a friend for dinner, and while standing outside in the queue (it was a popular restaurant), a man with a clipboard was taking names for the waitlist:“It’s a 20 minute wait, I’m afraid. Can I take your name?”I gave my name, said I’m happy to wait. “Celebrating anything special tonight?” he asked, his pen hovering over the tick-box question on his clipboard.
