The Independent (Edgewood, NM)
The Independent was established in 1999 to serve the village of Tijeras, a small mountain community that was often ignored by the larger media outlets in Albuquerque. Over time, it expanded its reach to cover over 4,000 square miles of rural areas to the east of Albuquerque, including the East Mountains, Edgewood, Torrance County, and the Estancia Valley. The paper's longtime owner and publisher, Leota Harriman, stopped publishing in late 2022, coinciding with the conclusion of the Covid pandemic. In early 2023, a local newspaper group based in New Mexico, Ctrl+P Publishing, acquired The Independent and revived it as the weekly newspaper for the East Mountains, Edgewood, and the Estancia Valley.
