The Indypendent

The Indypendent

We are a free, forward-thinking monthly publication and online news platform. Established in 2000, The Indy has become a beloved part of New York City's media landscape. Our focus is on social justice movements both in New York and elsewhere, highlighting the concerns that drive these initiatives because we believe that organized communities are the catalysts for meaningful change. We blend traditional investigative reporting with thorough research while maintaining a critical perspective on news and culture. Our aim is to examine how various power structures—economic, political, and social—influence individuals' lives. We value facts and strive to provide context for them. Our journalism is anything but passive or deferential to those in power; we reject the notion of objectivity that obscures truth. With a combined print and online readership exceeding 100,000, we publish our print edition at the start of each month and maintain a website that is updated almost daily. We are active on social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Soundcloud, and we offer a weekly e-newsletter that you can subscribe to here. The Indypendent has received over 50 awards from the New York Community Media Alliance for outstanding journalism. Our operations are funded through subscriptions, reader donations, grants, and advertising, and we are supported by a dedicated staff and a network of volunteer contributors.

Journalist and Lutheran pastor Angela Denker, herself the mother of sons, knows that boys can be affectionate, caring and sweet, but she also knows that they can be drawn to hate and violence. Disciples of White Jesus: The Radicalization of American Boyhood, Denker’s second book, probes the ways Christian nationalism is marketed to them and exposes the misogyny, racism, homophobia, transphobia and xenophobia that are its stock and trade.

The term “accountability” is often bandied about, but the Pinko Collective’s latest book, After Accountability, does a deep dive into what it actually means to be accountable and to whom.

Rare is the college brochure that informs potential students of the minutiae of massive university financial endowments. Today’s universities, which often hold colossal land and stock portfolios, can be giant and complicated institutions with interdisciplinary administrations straddling education in the classroom and corporate governance in management. But what’s left off during a campus tour can soon become apparent after orientation.

It takes two to Ouija, at least the way I played the spiritualist parlor game growing up. Each person places a hand on the planchette and lets it be their guide. Of course, one hand is actually directing the pointer in the process of divination. The other participates only in so far as it submits to the message. Spectacle functions in much the same way. There’s no show without an audience and, in a consumerist society, it’s expected to be a passive one.

In these fascist times, you may find yourself craving community, but wary of repeating unhealthy patterns in your dating life, friendship circles and activist groups. Thank goodness for Dean Spade’s new book, Love in a Fucked-Up World: How to Build Relationships, Hook Up, and Raise Hell Together. Spade has been an activist and author for 20-plus years, most notably founding the Sylvia Rivera Law Project for trans advocacy.
