Here’s the remarkable story of Abraham Losford, my favorite Howell resident of all time. He was a fugitive slave who became the most beloved barber in Howell and brought out the best in all the people in his new hometown. Much of the information for this story comes from his obituary, which was printed in the Livingston Republican on June 2, 1897. That newspaper later became the Livingston County Press, and several decades later, I became the editor of it.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the opportunity to talk with people in my neighborhood about the upcoming election. One thing I’ve heard often is people don’t know who to believe because of fake news. I’ve worked in communications and media for a couple decades now. I did my graduate work in Media Studies at Wayne State University. Back then the digital production equipment and distribution channels were becoming more available to average people.

Livingston County lost an original this week when the Rev. Carl Welser passed away on Christmas Eve at the age of 87. And I lost a great friend. Carl was a Lutheran pastor in Hamburg Township for many years, and he was so, so much more. You can read his full obituary here, and suffice it to say, you don’t see many pastors with this kind of résumé.

In terms of ridiculous and petty things that an elected body in Livingston County has ever done, the Howell City Council just jumped to the front of the line. And that’s saying a lot. What they did this week wasn’t just outrageous. It wasn’t just petty. It was flat-out dumb. What they did this week is that they voted 4-2 to ask Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to remove a member of the Howell Carnegie District Library Board for doing an impression of someone. That’s right.

We’ve uncovered a historic gem – a very strange 1939 Hollywood movie that was filmed in downtown Pinckney. And you can see a clip from it below. The film was called “The Scarecrow Takes Up Magic,” and although it was technically a Hollywood production, it was mainly an advertisement for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company.
