ELPD Update on Double Homicide Investigation from November 2024

EAST LANSING, MI - The East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) has received an update from the Ingham County Medical Examiner's Office identifying the bodies that were found in a freezer on Nov. 7, 2024, in East Lansing. The body of Susan Barbara Weerawat (age 76) and the remains of the body of Pramort Weerawat (age 72) have been identified using various scientific techniques.

As of June 30, 2023, Michigan drivers are required to follow a new hands-free driving law aimed at improving road safety. The legislation makes it illegal to manually use a cell phone or other mobile electronic device while operating a vehicle on Michigan roads. Drivers cannot hold or support a phone or other device with any part of their body-including hands, arms, or shoulders.

On Sunday, April 6, 2025, at approximately 4:00 pm, a passing motorist contacted the Ingham 911 Center reporting a man walking the wrong way on the highway creating a hazard, along US127 near Barnes Road, in Vevay Township. Several police personnel arrived on scene and observed the previously described man on the freeway in moving traffic. Personnel contacted him; he was non-compliant and soon after produced multiple knives. De-escalation efforts continued for several minutes.

On Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at 12:30 p.m., Ingham County Sheriff's Deputies responded to the 400 block of Rexford Avenue in Delhi Township for a vehicle that crashed into a single-family home. The vehicle left the scene shortly after crashing. A Deputy assigned to the Delhi Division located the vehicle in a nearby apartment complex and determined a 13-year-old had taken the vehicle without her mother knowing. Three other minors were in the car at the time of the crash.

LANSING,MI - At approximately 4:00 p.m., a hunter on private land looking for deer sheds, came across what he believed to be human remains in the woods. Michigan State Police (MSP) troopers along with detectives from the Special Investigation Section and the MSP Lab from the Lansing Post were dispatched to the area of Cochran Rd near Eaton Hwy, in Oneida Twp, Eaton County, after the deceased subject was found in the woods.
