As finals week inches closer, the Associated Student Organization brought out glitter, beads and lots of glue for Pierce College students to get their hands gooey and their minds off of studying. Attendees of ASO’s “Relax with Crafts” event made multicolor, sparkly slime on Tuesday, under the shining May sun along Rocky Young Park. It was one of several ASO activities this week, with “Pawsitivity” and “Grad Fest” events coming up on Thursday.

‘A quiet leader’: Pierce football player Terance Pope Jr. dies at 21

Terance Pope Jr., a defensive back on the Pierce College football team who aspired to play in the NFL, died on Dec. 17, 2024. He was 21 years old. Pope Jr. was shot in Sanford, Fla., and three suspects have been arrested in connection to the killing. The has charged suspects Khalil Hunter, 22, and James Nelson, 22, with first-degree felony murder, and Shunavious Dorsey, 23, with being an accessory, for the killing.
19 horses housed at Pierce due to fire evacuations in Malibu

Nineteen horses are being temporarily kept at the Pierce College Farm, after they were evacuated from Malibu due to the ongoing Franklin Fire. “We are housing them, and all of the horses that are here currently have come from high risk fire areas,” Farm Manager Marcie Sakadjian said. “It’s not safe for them to stay where their barns are.”Pierce staff are working with Los Angeles County Animal Control to manage and evacuate horses.

In a Thanksgiving concert that combined upbeat pop hits, holiday classics, original spoken word pieces and a traditional Yiddish folk song, the Pierce College choir worked to spread gratitude on Saturday, Nov. 23, using the universal language of music. “We wanted to have the vibe of a Thanksgiving feast and of coming together,” Choir Director Garineh Avakian said.

Many students at Pierce College take English 103 to satisfy their critical thinking requirement for transfer to a UC or CSU. At Santa Monica College, 20 miles away, the comparable course to meet that requirement is ENGL 2. This incongruence of course names and numbers is common across California. With the aim of eliminating potential confusion caused by non-uniform course information, Assemblymember Marc Berman, D-Menlo Park, authored AB 1111, which was signed into law in 2021.
Con: speed cameras are not a solution

Car culture in Los Angeles presents plenty of issues for the average driver. Reckless driving is a prevalent problem in areas within a mile of college campuses. Pierce College has had accidents occuring in the same intersection in 2017, 2022 and 2024 open a discussion about how to deal with safety for drivers and pedestrians around campus. While driving around Pierce college is in itself risky, and can be costly to the average student, installing speed cameras is not the answer.
