The Simpsonian

The Simpsonian holds the title of the oldest continuously published student newspaper in the country, with its first issue released in September 1870. Throughout the academic year, excluding breaks for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring, and May Term, individual copies can be picked up on the Simpson College campus every Thursday.

    Students, faculty and community members joined together in Hubbell Hall on Friday, April 25, to watch the livestream of President Jay Byers’ celebration of life ceremony held at Hoyt Sherman Place in Des Moines. Filled with joyous music and community, the ceremony celebrated the deep impact Byers left on not only Simpson but the world.

    April 30, 2025 You probably have no idea who I am, and that’s perfect! Either way, you know of the Simpsonian, or, at least I hope you do, you are reading it. For the past year, I have been leading the charge to cover Simpson College news with my team of editors and staff. While it hasn’t been easy—in fact, it’s been extremely difficult—I will be forever grateful for the stories I’ve been able to tell and the people I’ve been able to meet.

    April 30, 2025 It is hard to believe that this piece marks the end of my time with student media and at Simpson College. I do not think this little letter can encapsulate my emotions behind this bittersweet farewell. First and foremost, I owe so many thank-yous. I have been incredibly blessed to have so many amazing people as my cheerleaders and support. It has been a joy to witness such a strong community over these past four years and an even greater joy to have become part of it.

    April 24, 2025 Brian Steffen, a communications and journalism professor of 36 years, will retire after the 2025 May term. Steffen is leaving a legacy of excellence in the communications programs, many of which he helped create. “When I came, the major here was called communication, and it was really kind of half speech communication, with some journalism courses mixed in, which was pretty unusual,” Steffen said.

    A Celebration of Jay’s life will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 25, at Hoyt Sherman Place. The event will be open to the public. The 1,200-seat auditorium is located at 1501 Woodland Ave. We will continue to update as more information is released.
