The Socialist

The Socialist

The Socialist is the weekly publication of the Socialist Party. It was established in 1964 as Militant and identified itself as the "Marxist voice of Labour and Youth." The paper was significant in uniting a powerful left-wing faction within the British Labour Party, leading to the group being referred to as the Militant tendency, named after the newspaper they distributed and engaged with. In 1997, Militant Labour, which emerged from the Militant tendency, rebranded itself as the Socialist Party, and the Militant newspaper was renamed The Socialist in the same year.

Eric Segal, Kent Socialist PartyThe Labour government’s slashing of entitlement to winter fuel payment shocked millions of pensioners. In response, trade union Unite launched a national campaign to defend the winter fuel payment, including pursuing a judicial review to overturn the government’s decision to cut payments to all but the poorest pensioners. With every passing month, Thames Water moves closer to the brink of collapse. Now it has announced its preferred buyer – US private equity firm KKR – has dropped out. Presumably KKR decided it wouldn’t be easy to squeeze much more out of the failing privatised company. Nationalisation continues to appear to be inevitable, eventually. When push comes to shove, any government will be forced to step in to prevent total collapse of a company that supplies water to roughly a quarter of Britain.

Feeling the working-class anger against their proposed disability benefits reforms, it has been reported that prime minister and chancellor Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves are looking to soften the blow. The government plans to limit the eligibility criteria for Personal Independence Payments (PIP) and the work capability assessment component of Universal Credit. These benefits are available to disabled and unwell people who are both in work and unable to work.
