Nepal’s hydropower boom comes at the cost of its fish

The beginning of 2024 for Nepal was marked by important talks to export hydropower produced electricity. In the first week of January, Nepal signed a 25-year trade deal with India. One key agreement was to sell 10,000 MW of electricity to India in the next 10 years. And in the third week of February, Kulman Ghising, the managing director of the Nepal Electricity Authority led a delegation to Bangladesh to discuss tariffs for electricity trade.

Mekong’s giant fish threatened by dams and wetland conversions

Etched in the ancient temples of Angkor, the giant barb is the largest carp species in the world and Cambodia’s national fish. Despite its revered status, however, it is among an estimated 19% of Mekong River fish species facing extinction. The giant barb may disappear along with other species unique to the Mekong unless decision-makers stop undervaluing and overlooking the Mekong’s fishes, according to the Mekong’s Forgotten Fishes report, which was produced by a cohort of 25 conservation groups.

The Salween explained: Asia’s last great undammed river

Flowing from the headwaters in Tibet, the Salween traverses China and Myanmar and defines part of Thailand’s western border. Stretching over 3,200km (2,000 miles), it is Asia’s longest free-flowing river, running from the Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan province in south-west China to the delta near Mawlamyine in south-east Myanmar, where it meets the Andaman Sea. However, plans for seven major hydropower projects along the Salween basin threaten this status.

2023 was the hottest year on record. Perversely, the UN Environment Programme Adaptation Gap Report 2023, published in November last year, revealed that public funding for adaptation to climate change had decreased. The report estimated that USD 215-387 billion (lower figure based on UNEP’s modelling, higher on developing country submissions to the UNFCCC) were needed per year, but only USD 21 billion was available in 2023. The shortfall was an immense USD 194-366 billion per year.
