More than four years after the first long-acting HIV treatment (LA-ART) was approved, people in many parts of the U.S. struggle to get these medications, according to two new studies. While some barriers are gradually diminishing over time, availability and affordability remain inconsistent in many states, particularly outside urban areas and well-staffed sexual health clinics. However, providers and advocates who spoke with TheBodyPro suggested ways of minimizing these hurdles.

Chronic pain is an important comorbidity in people living with HIV, and Jessica Merlin, M.D., Ph.D., is among the world’s leading experts on the subject. Merlin points to two key factors accentuating the priority of addressing pain in HIV care. For one thing, it is highly prevalent: Somewhere between 25% and 85% of people living with HIV report pain that lasts longer than three months, she said (i.e., it persists beyond the typical period of tissue injury and repair).

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is at the heart of modern HIV prevention strategies, but what about post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP)? Does it still have a role to play? At this year's IDWeek conference, Darrell H.S.
