Before I became a foodie, I didn’t really understand the fuss about Julia Child. I watched her on PBS occasionally growing up, but I couldn’t relate to her or to the food she prepared. It wasn’t anything like the food served in my family, where meals were built around meat and potatoes. Vegetables were likely to be salads or canned corn since these were the two options all us kids liked.

I’m a mustard fan. I like it yellow, brown, grainy, hot, sweet. I eat it with sausage, cheese, potatoes, cooked carrots, and of course in salad dressings. Whenever I go to a new country, I always check out the mustard. It’s an inexpensive condiment, goes with many different foods, and, the best part, has hardly any calories! He’s giving us a tour, and around every corner we are awed by the efficiency and cleanliness of the factory.

Colorful lights dispel the darkness as I walk through a large tunnel 600 feet beneath the city of Zipaquira, Colombia, not far from the capital city, Bogota. Soon a breathtaking scene opens up before me: the awe-inspiring Salt Cathedral built underground in 1995 in what used to be a salt mine. The only subterranean temple in the world, this architectural and engineering jewel attracts nearly 600,000 visitors annually from around the globe.
