I’m a mustard fan. I like it yellow, brown, grainy, hot, sweet. I eat it with sausage, cheese, potatoes, cooked carrots, and of course in salad dressings. Whenever I go to a new country, I always check out the mustard. It’s an inexpensive condiment, goes with many different foods, and, the best part, has hardly any calories! So when Peter and I decide to go camping in France for a week, we set our sights on Dijon and the surrounding Bourgogne (Burgundy) region.

Camping in Europe sounds like a dream, doesn’t it? Traveling wherever the road leads, hiking through beautiful scenery, discovering new cultures and cuisines. In the 1990s Peter and I had the opportunity to take our three young children camping for six months in Europe. I’m overlooking a beer garden and below men in lederhosen are dancing with smiling women in dirndls as happy German music plays in the background. A man carrying ten liters of beer—five mugs per hand—jostles past the dancers. My own beer tastes amazing. I’m walking on a path through the woods when suddenly giant stone columns rise up before me 120 feet high. Beside them is a pond, where legend says, a beautiful woman jumped off the tallest rock and survived.

Wherever you are in Sweden, you can’t go far without finding yourself deep in the woods. That’s because forests cover 70 percent of Sweden’s landscape. These deep forests are a beautiful natural tangle of old-growth trees, earthy smells, and—on a good day—sunlight streaming through the canopy to bring light and warmth to the forest floor below. Whenever I’m in the woods in Sweden, I half expect to meet an elf or a dwarf wearing a red cap and white beard and beaming a wide smile.

I sit in the desert twilight, swirls of sunset colors wash the air in shades of pink, apricot, and green. It’s that magical moment when day melts into night, and I have a front row seat. I sip a tasty margarita by the pool at the J.W. Marriott Camelback Inn and watch a young family splash in the turquoise water, their ripples making exotic shapes and patterns on the water’s surface, a colorful kaleidoscope undulating before my eyes.
