The American Trail Running Association, or ATRA, was established in the summer of 1996 as a nonprofit organization based in Colorado, dedicated to the mountain, ultra, and trail (MUT) running community. Our goal is to advocate for and promote the sport of mountain, ultra, and trail running. We provide various membership options, including individual, club, race, and corporate memberships. A key feature of our organization is our quarterly newsletter, Trail Times, which features a calendar of national events, insightful articles, and important updates related to our sport.

The following article was written by Brent Runzel, a trail runner based in Illinois, who enjoyed an entry from the ATRA giveaway program for the Gristmill Grinder. It all started with Volume 11: Issue 146 / December 4, 2024 ATRA e-newsletter offering an entry giveaway to the Gristmill Grinder Half Marathon at Babcock State Park in West Virginia on April 19, 2025. Admittedly, my immediate sweepstakes bid was probably a bit weak.
