Seventeen years ago, I wrote a satirical essay entitled, L337 Theory, on the paradisiacal and all-embracing promise of the rising geek cultural commodity. Neo-pronouns, L337-speke, torrent technology and the superhero movie boom would drive us to new heights of kindness, comprehension, international exchange, and emotive, humanist cache! Right? Surely? But, no. And, we knew it then, that it would not. That’s the wind back there, seventeen years old.
