Established in 1966 as The Nation Institute, Type Media Center hosts a variety of programs and a vibrant community of journalists, authors, and writing fellows. Our diverse initiatives feature a successful book publishing division, Bold Type Books (previously Nation Books); Type Investigations, our acclaimed program that backs innovative investigative journalism; TomDispatch, a popular and widely shared website; Fellowships that support more than 25 prominent reporters annually; Prize programs that recognize significant contributions; and high-profile Events that offer a stage for leading journalists, thinkers, and activists to explore critical issues facing society today.

    For The New York Times, Abelin-Bevier Fellow Helen Ouyang examines how the Federal Aviation Administration’s stringent requirements concerning mental health treatment puts pressure on pilots to not seek treatment. Ouyang interviewed several pilots who either knew of colleagues who had hidden medical conditions from the FAA or who admitted to hiding conditions themselves for fear of being grounded. Refusing to disclose mental health problems or receive treatment can have dangerous consequences.
