The theme of a couple of the articles in this issue of the Viodi View is the integration of human and machine. In both cases, if the machines’ directions are off by just a fraction, it could lead to a bad outcome. A 25-minute conversation with Google’s Gemini inspired the first article. Unfortunately, Gemini did not provide references for what it wrote, so it did not get a promotion from intern to author. Thanks to the Broadband Forum, my employer, for supporting this newsletter.
Generative AI as an Extreme Compression Method

Are text files the future of image and, potentially, video compression? Using text prompts to generate images is well known. But, what about using generative AI in the reverse direction to create a text file prompt for a given image? Using this technique could result in more than 100:1 improvement in file size from hundreds of kilobytes to kilobytes. It is clear from the limited test results shown below, that off-the-shelf generative AI products could achieve this sort of compression improvement.

Are websites a metaphor for human life? Does the baggage associated with maintenance, sap the energy required to create new content? The long and short of it is that if you can’t read these words on the Viodi website, there is still an issue with excessive Inode (Index-node) usage. Just like natural human wear and tear, this excessive Inode usage (and other bad stuff) happens with a 23+-year-old website where content is prioritized over the organization and optimization of said content.

Note: This book review is dedicated to the late John P. Messmer: a voracious reader, outstanding engineer, and stand-up guy with an enormous heart. Paying homage to Messmer’s book-a-day reading habit, this reviewer read Virtual Vengeance in a day. It was refreshing to read words on paper, instead of a screen, and to become engrossed in a story that is more relevant today than when it was published.

Breaking bread, sharing the sweat of a hard day’s work, and surmounting the challenges of imperfection are the things that connect humans. Building a community is a challenge. The personal revelation from writing this issue of the Viodi View is what a blessing it has been to spend my entire career in telecommunications. The employers have come and gone (virtually all of them gone), but the relationships remain. Last week’s SCTE’s TechExpo was a good reminder of how relationships are the true wealth of work as it reconnected me with friends old and new from multiple eras. It’s impossible to describe the warm feeling that brings.

The excitement and buzz of the show floor had the feel of those conferences from the days of yore.
