Wise resident and United States Air Force veteran Frank Gustkey will be the grand marshal for the Wise Fourth of July Parade & Festival. The event will begin at 10 a.m. with the Independence Day Parade, followed by the festival on the grounds of Wise Baptist Church. Festivities will conclude at 2 p.m.Gustkey, a native of Pennsylvania, moved to Warren County in 1977 and settled in Wise. He and his wife, Nancy Kay Gustkey, were married at Wise Baptist Church in 1964.

During its regular monthly meeting on June 10, the Warren County Board of Education accepted the highest bid in the amount of $435,300 for the purchase of the former South Warren Elementary School building. The bid was submitted by Coral Construction. South Warren Elementary School, located on Shocco Springs Road in the Afton-Elberon community, was constructed in 1964 and closed after the 2018-19 school year. The South Warren property includes the former school and approximately 18 acres of land.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation is expected to begin work in the next few weeks to expand the intersection of Main Street and East Macon Street in downtown Warrenton. During the Warrenton Board of Commissioners’ June 9 meeting, Town Administrator Robert Davie told the board that detours would primarily impact the routes of transfer trucks. He also spoke with the newspaper about the project last week.

The Norlina Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing about the proposed budget for fiscal year 2025-26 at 5:30 p.m. on June 17 at Town Hall, located at 139 Hyco St., Norlina. The general public is welcome to ask questions and make comments. Town commissioners discussed the proposed budget during a recent work session. The recommended budget proposes a tax rate of 64 cents per $100 valuation, a decrease from the current tax rate of 74 cents per $100 valuation.
