Anna Taylor-McCants, a pastor in metro Detroit, just received a $100K grant for her work with FedUp Ministries. FedUp Ministries has been helping people in Metro Detroit deal with food insecurity for almost five years. They were recently nominated to receive the $110K grant through the Pilot Pen G2 Overachievers award, which recognizes individuals making a difference in their communities. Anna was the latest recipient and was honored to receive the award on the Kelly Clarkson show last week.

Detroiters with disabilities have a new same-day option for public transportation thanks to DDOT Now. DDOT has launched a new same-day paratransit service called DDOT Now, allowing Detroit residents with disabilities to schedule rides the day before or up to an hour in advance. The service operates between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday, with a fare of $2.50 per ride. The program aims to provide more flexibility and convenience for riders, supported by federal and local funding.

Metro Food Rescue is collecting excess food from the Detroit Grand Prix to feed those in need across Michigan, providing approximately 5,000 meals to 10 different organizations. Founder Chad Techner aims to reduce food waste in metro Detroit by delivering leftover food from events to those in need. Tens of thousands of pounds of food would have been thrown away, but thanks to the hard work put in by everyone at Metro Food Rescue, that food will feed thousands.

Detroit music legend “Amp” Fiddler made an indelible mark on the cultural life of his community. On Friday, May 16, his community turned out to honor him. The corner of 7 Mile Road and Revere Street in Conant Gardens was renamed Amp Fiddler Avenue. The official unveiling took place down the street from his former home. Amp died from cancer in 2023. “He was everything, hip-hop and everything in between,” Detroit City Councilman Coleman Young II said in an interview with Local 4 News Detroit.
