While theaters are getting an original cinematic treat this week, there are a variety of other films out there as well. This set of write-ups includes a queer romantic comedy remake, a body horror drama, a British comedy, a road trip comedy, an Oakland-set anthology, an action movie homage, a Tony Jaa action flick, and a Disney documentary.

When asked to name the directors whose latest films I want to see instantly, it’s a prompt that doesn’t elicit much reaction from me, as I am happy to see so many different filmmakers’ work. Now, when considering true event filmmakers, the directors who are just as likely as the stars to bring in the audiences, there really only are a handful. Right now, coming alongside the Nolans and Tarantinos, I think there’s a good argument to make for Ryan Coogler.

Christopher Landon‘s Drop is one of those films that knows what it is and wants the audience to have fun. While the modern-day technological thriller uses Hitchockian style to deliver twists and turns, it’s a surprisingly sharp tale about survivors of domestic abuse trying to find a sense of normalcy after dealing with traumatizing events. Drop centers on Violet (Meghann Fahy), a widowed mother of one, who helps victims of abuse regain control of their lives.

Well, that was certainly intense. Not so much an experimental effort as a stripped-down one, Warfare is the result of a filmmaker aiming for something raw and honest. Prominently billed as being “based on memories,” this film is doing all it can to keep the theatrics out of the intensity of battle and display what it is to be experiencing heavy action within insurgent territory.

I enjoy a high-concept thriller that so cheerfully understands how ridiculous it is. Drop is the sort of film that is fully happy to pull the audience’s leg to ensure they know they’re supposed to be having fun. Sure, there are some genuine moments of suspense to keep the visceral nature of the story active, but a good amount of laughs come through as well, thanks to the heightened circumstances presented.
