    880 South2021 Alameda Ave., (510) 521-1247. Open 4th Sat of month; tour 1-4pm. $5. Designed as his family home by architect Henry H. Meyers and built by his German-born father Jacob Meyers in 1897, the construction cost to build the two-story Meyers House then was $4,000. Now a house museum, it is an example of the Colonial Revival style that was popular around the turn of the century. The house was considered an upper middle-class residence at that time, and rooms are small, as was usual then.

    80 North2727 Milvia St./Derby St.Operating within a gigantic, open indoor space that was once the Iceland ice skating rink, Sports Basement--Berkeley offers a huge selection of Hoka shoes, a massive selection of bikes, and way, way more sports-related gear. Some used sports gear and clothing can be traded in for store credit, and many items are accepted as donations (details at website).

Situated in a duplex shared with Dona Mexican restaurant, Pomella specializes in Middle Eastern and Israeli fare and offers counter service--items are brought to the table. Big bowls of composed salads are particularly popular, and most items are meant to be shared. Ingredients are mostly organic, lamb is grass fed, salmon and shrimp are sustainably farmed, and the flatbread and pita are freshly housemade.

Sydney Smith said, “Thank God for tea! What would the world do without tea?--how did it exist? I am glad I was not born before tea.” True again.
