    This month, two West Liberty middle school students – Georgia Clark and Olivia DeShazo – competed in the local level of the National Civics Bee, held in Des Moines. Meant to inspire young Americans to engage with civics and contribute to their communities, the annual National Civics Bee judges participants on their civic literacy and skills. The students first each qualified for the competition by writing a civics essay responding to three prompt questions.

    West Liberty’s girls’ golf team won its first dual meet of the season when it defeated Iowa City Regina 222-263 last Monday (April 14) at West Liberty Country Club. The Comets had the top three scorers at this nine-hole meet with senior Addison Beaver receiving medalist honors with her round of 49. Sophomore Kamryn Gilmore was one stroke behind her with a 50. Senior Sophie Buysse was third overall with a 57. Just four Comets teed it up, but senior Maggie Mahoney had a solid fourth score with a 66.

    A number of water, parks and recreation, police, and library fees in West Liberty have either been increased or removed through the approval of Resolution No. 20250415-239, amending and approving the fee appendix schedule of fees and charges in West Liberty. The resolution was approved during the city council’s April 15 meeting. Any fee not included on the amendment will remain the same as seen on the current appendix in the city code.

    Years worth of restoration and Iowa history nearly went up in flames early last week when a field near the famous Octagonal Barn in Johnson County caught fire. Thanks to the efforts of the West Branch Fire Department, the barn was saved. The Secrest 1883 Octagonal Barn, located four miles east of Iowa City and one mile west of Downey, is a one of a kind barn, Richard Tyler says.

    Three engineering firms are competing to become West Liberty’s next city engineering firm. During the April 15 work session, West Liberty City Council listened to two engineering firm presentations. Then, during the regular city council meeting, a presentation was given by City Engineer Leo Foley for Veenstra & Kimm, Inc. of Rock Island, West Liberty’s current engineering firm.
