This month, two West Liberty middle school students – Georgia Clark and Olivia DeShazo – competed in the local level of the National Civics Bee, held in Des Moines. Meant to inspire young Americans to engage with civics and contribute to their communities, the annual National Civics Bee judges participants on their civic literacy and skills. The students first each qualified for the competition by writing a civics essay responding to three prompt questions.

West Liberty’s girls’ golf team won its first dual meet of the season when it defeated Iowa City Regina 222-263 last Monday (April 14) at West Liberty Country Club. The Comets had the top three scorers at this nine-hole meet with senior Addison Beaver receiving medalist honors with her round of 49. Sophomore Kamryn Gilmore was one stroke behind her with a 50. Senior Sophie Buysse was third overall with a 57. Just four Comets teed it up, but senior Maggie Mahoney had a solid fourth score with a 66.

A number of water, parks and recreation, police, and library fees in West Liberty have either been increased or removed through the approval of Resolution No. 20250415-239, amending and approving the fee appendix schedule of fees and charges in West Liberty. The resolution was approved during the city council’s April 15 meeting. Any fee not included on the amendment will remain the same as seen on the current appendix in the city code.
Historic Iowa barn saved from field fire - West Liberty Index

Years worth of restoration and Iowa history nearly went up in flames early last week when a field near the famous Octagonal Barn in Johnson County caught fire. Thanks to the efforts of the West Branch Fire Department, the barn was saved. The Secrest 1883 Octagonal Barn, located four miles east of Iowa City and one mile west of Downey, is a one of a kind barn, Richard Tyler says.

Three engineering firms are competing to become West Liberty’s next city engineering firm. During the April 15 work session, West Liberty City Council listened to two engineering firm presentations. Then, during the regular city council meeting, a presentation was given by City Engineer Leo Foley for Veenstra & Kimm, Inc. of Rock Island, West Liberty’s current engineering firm.

For the second year in a row, the students at West Liberty High school will bring a variety of singing, dancing and acting to their audience through the WLHS Comet Cabaret. This year’s cabaret will be 7 p.m. May 1, 2 and 3 at the high school auditorium. Tickets are $10 each, and can be purchased digitally at gobound.com/ia/schools/westliberty/ticketsPrior to the start of the cabarets, school drama coach Dorianne Rees said the drama department tried to do spring musicals instead.

It was a record-setting week for West Liberty’s boys’ track and field team with senior Ryker Dengler making more headlines. At last Tuesday’s (April 15) Indian Relays at Wapello High School, Dengler set the meet record for the 400 hurdles. His time of 55.83 seconds easily won the meet. West Liberty finished sixth overall at the Wapello Indian Relays with 59 team points. The top five schools were Mediapolis (126), Washington (119), Wilton (101), Winfield-Mt. Union (100.5) and Danville (83).

The horticulture class and FFA students at West Liberty High School have been working hard inside their greenhouse, and their efforts are just about ready to be shown off. Starting Friday, April 18, West Liberty residents can submit online orders for West Liberty FFA’s annual plant sale. Thirteen students from West Liberty visited China over spring break in March as part of Inheritance of Friendship, a Chinese-initiated program with a goal of inviting 50,000 U.S. youth to China for exchanges and study within a five-year period in the hopes of strengthening friendship and cultural understanding between the two countries. History teacher Melanie Clark and social studies teacher James Laughlin acted as chaperones during the trip.

West Liberty High School Principal Brenda Arthur-Miller reported an overall high school average GPA is 3.17 to the school board, with the 9th grade having a class GPA of 2.91, 10th grade having a 3.29, 11th grade having a 3.11, and 12th grade having a 3.36. Second trimester GPAs slipped in all classes from about 0.06 to 0.19 points. Arthur-Miller attributes this to the semester having more absences due to vacations and sick days.
