The station first went on air in 1924 at a power of 100 watts, originally operating on the frequency of 1310 kilohertz and was dubbed "The Voice of the Alleghenies." The call letters WFBG represent its founder, William F. B. Gable, who also owned Gable's department store in Altoona. Over time, the station transitioned to 1290 on the dial, increasing its power to 5000 watts during the day and 1000 watts at night. WFBG has established itself as a leading and highly regarded station, serving as the largest radio outlet between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
