An incredible set of records of the population of England and Wales at the start of the Second World War is free to search for the next month. Family history website Findmypast has announced it is offering free access to the 1939 Register until 9 May 2025 as part of celebrations of the 80th anniversary of VE Day, or the end of the war in Europe. The 1939 Register was conducted by the British government on 29 September 1939, soon after the start of the war.

23andMe, one of the world’s largest DNA testing companies, announced yesterday that it is filing for bankruptcy. The company said it has initiated voluntary Chapter 11 proceedings in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Missouri. If approved by the court, 23andMe will seek to sell all of its assets over a 45-day process. The company said that it would continue to operate its business and there would be no changes to the way it stores customer data.
