Detroit Public TV (DPTV) started its journey in 1955 as WTVS Channel 56, functioning as a non-commercial, educational television station under the Detroit Educational Television Foundation. Today, DPTV serves the community by running five digital broadcast channels. The transition to digital broadcasting began in October 2000, and the old analog Channel 56 ceased operations in 2009 as the entire broadcasting industry switched to digital formats.
