WVIK-FM (Rock Island, IL)

WVIK (90.3 FM) serves as the main National Public Radio station for the Quad Cities region, which includes parts of eastern Iowa and northwestern Illinois. It is based in Rock Island, Illinois, and is owned by Augustana College, with its studios situated on the college campus. Additionally, the station runs a low-powered translator, K240DZ, broadcasting at 95.9 FM in Dubuque, Iowa. The station first went on air on August 25, 1980, originally at 90.1 FM. At that time, the Quad Cities was one of the last areas in Iowa and Illinois to receive a full-strength NPR signal. Before 1980, listeners in the region primarily accessed NPR programming through a low-powered translator from KUNI in Cedar Falls, although some areas did receive limited coverage from WSUI in Iowa City. In 1991, WVIK transitioned to its current frequency, and in 1996, it launched its translator service in Dubuque.
