In November 2023, on the heels of the October 7th attacks, Zibby Media was supposed to sponsor the National Book Awards. I’d heard that some type of coordinated, pro-Palestinian/anti-Israel plan was in place among the finalists (specifically, I’d heard every speech would include antisemitic rhetoric). Really?! I called the organizers to find out what was going on. The National Book Foundation had also heard of something brewing, but they didn’t know what.

Ah, yes. Another morning, another example of antisemitic trolls trying to take down a Jewish creative project. It’s just another day in our post-October 7th world. Ironically, that’s exactly what this project is about. My husband Kyle and I are associate producers on the upcoming film called “October 8,” produced and directed by Wendy Sachs. (Trailer here.) got us involved early on, and then we looped in my brother, Teddy Schwarzman, who ended up becoming an executive producer.
Love books?! Same.

I love to read. That feeling of getting lost in a story is priceless. The best is when I’m so into a book that I literally can’t put it down, like when I was finishing Charlotte McConaghy’s latest novel Wild Dark Shorelast week and read it on the plane from Miami, getting off the plane, walking through the airport, and in the car home, gasping all the way. Like many book lovers, that comes with a deep respect for authors.

They Aren't Always Happy

I’ve definitely had many not happy Valentine’s Days… when I was single in my 20s wondering if I would ever find my person… when all my high school friends got roses during school one year except me (why that tradition??)… when I was older, but, well, lonely. But this one is a good year (at least, love-wise, forget the world), so I’m spreading my warmth and good cheer — not to rub my current happiness with my husband and kids in anyone’s face, but to say some years are better than others.

In the aftermath of the L.A. fires, Zibby’s Bookshop in Santa Monica launched a pop-up clothing drive to give beautiful, brand-new apparel and accessories to families who had just lost their homes in (or had been indefinitely displaced by) the fires. Over 14 days, we served 870 families with donations from 62 brands. Local businesses helped us mobilize and we even got a two-week lease for free. So many people and brands stepped up in countless ways to make this happen.

Hi everyone,As you may know, I’m the owner of Zibby’s Bookshop in Santa Monica, CA and a (part-time) Palisades resident who has been deeply affected by the fire. I’ve just finished organizing a pop-up clothing drive for 800+ families who lost their homes with items donated by 50+ brands. Now, I’m committing to rebuild the school libraries for four Palisades schools which have been destroyed by the fire. Many of the students at these schools have also lost their homes.

“Is it smoky? Do you smell smoke?”“No, love. It just rained. I don’t smell anything,” he said. But I smelled it. Was it in my imagination? Kyle and I were waiting curbside at LAX, our hands on our suitcases, backpacks on. Everything looked the same as when we usually arrived. After almost ten years of going back and forth from New York to LA, we had the travel down to a science. “Aren’t we supposed to wear masks?” I asked, looking around. “No one else is wearing a mask.”“I think we’re okay,” Kyle said.
