    The Pickle — 4 min read In Israel, news broke this week that the country’s security forces are actively recruiting asylum seekers primarily from Eritrea and Sudan for war operations in Gaza, promising permanent status in exchange for their lives, and, inevitably, the deaths of Palestinians. There are approximately 30,000 such asylum seekers in Israel seeking safety from civil war and violent repression.

    In the afternoon of Monday 9 September, Israeli military forces stormed the Palestinian Bedouin village of Umm al-Khair, located in the South Hebron Hills of the occupied West Bank, once again. This is a village which has suffered 17 demolitions in the past threemonthsalone; a village which is subject to routine and relentless harassment by both Israeli settlers and the military – often in coordination with each other.

    FOA.001 is a photography book that emerged out of a video installation by British photographer Jacob Lazarus, who has been documenting settler violence in the occupied West Bank for the past two years as a member of the Jordan Valley Activists. This group of international volunteers make themselves present virtually every day in the Jordan Valley at the request of Palestinian herders, who face continual threats of displacement and physical violence from Jewish settlers.
