    Navy Captain Edwin T. Layton, first in his May 1953 Proceedings article, “Rendezvous in Reverse,” and then as a rear admiral in his Naval Institute oral history following his retirement, shared the details of a second, failed Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. In these edited excerpts, he recalled:I came across some Japanese records immediately following the war, which confirmed something we had believed but couldn’t prove during the war.

    Lieutenant Commander Galkin enlisted in the Naval Reserve in 1946 at the age of 17. After earning his commission in 1954, he served two years as a ship superintendent at Charleston Naval Shipyard and one year at SUPSHIP AIM Baltimore, retiring from the Naval Reserve in 1976. He holds a bachelor’s degree in physics from Brown University and an MBA from Wharton. This is an edited excerpt from his forthcoming autobiography.

    Navy Captain Edward L. Beach Sr. graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1888 as a passed midshipman and received his commission in 1890. He had early sea duty on board the USS Philadelphia (C-4), New York (ACR-2), and training ship Essex before joining the protected cruiser USS Baltimore (C-3) in 1897, on which he would participate in the Battle of Manila Bay.

    Future Navy Rear Admiral Edward K. Walker graduated from the Naval Academy in 1925 and following early tours on board battleships, spent 1927 through 1942 as a submariner. Intermixed with shore duty, he served in submarine command and on the staff of Commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet.

    CDR Goguen served as an enlisted Marine and as a yeoman in the Navy Reserve before she was commissioned as a naval intelligence officer in 1987. She retired in 2010 with more than 32 years of naval service. From 2002 to 2022, she was employed as a civilian historian for the Office of Naval Intelligence. She holds a PhD in military history from Temple University.
