What a volatile week we just had. High threatened tariffs were paused, mostly because about half of the world was eager to negotiate a new trade deal. The stock market couldn’t decide if it should go up or down, so we saw spectacular moves in both directions. And the US started a trade war with the second largest economy in the world. The most recently released economic numbers don’t look good. The rate of inflation which had inched down the last two months, started to inch up. The stock market sees so much uncertainty that stock prices continue their downward trend. And then there are tariffs. It looks like the short -term impact of tariffs may be painful. If the 25% tariffs stick, your favorite European cars will be more expensive as will all Canadian and perhaps Mexican goods.

For many today, President Trump’s economic policies seem chaotic. He imposes tariffs that look to be starting a trade war. And he is trying to drastically cut the functions of the federal government, which means terminating perhaps millions of mostly skilled workers. The resulting decrease in demand from the large cuts in government spending could do as much to reduce economic activity as they do to reduce prices. Trump’s defense is that his tariff policy has two desired outcomes.

The latest data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that in January the annual inflation rate rose to 3%. Recall the Federal Reserve’s target, set when inflation was more than 9% in June 2022, was 2%. We never reached that target, yet Fed Chair Jerome Powell cut interest rates three times in the Fall of last year. Most economists view these rate cuts as a mistake. This follows a series of mistakes that Powell’s Fed has made.

This means that the next year’s budget is based on a certain incremental increase above the current year’s budget. This technique is at least partially responsible for the current $36 trillion public debt. For as long as most of us can remember, Congress proposed an annual spending budget based on an increase from the prior year, often by 3% to 5% or more.

President Trump has just imposed rather large tariffs on our largest trading partners. He imposed a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico, a 25% tariff on Canadian imports except oil which got a 10% tariff, and an additional 10% tariff on goods from China. Trump has some very specific long-term goals he hopes the tariffs will reach. Many people object to the tariffs. After all, a tariff adds to the cost of the product and tends to raise the price. The president has vowed to reduce inflation in the US.

One way or another, the Supreme Court is going to decide that a state cannot remove Trump from based on the 14th amendment’s ban on insurrectionists holding elected office. Trump is an insurrectionist. But that is not the question currently before the Court. The decision will likely be joined by some of the Court’s moderates. It could even be unanimous.
