    Tense moments in school choice debate lead to broken gavel at the Texas Capitol Texas lawmakers approved a controversial bill in Austin early Thursday morning. The school choice bill was passed in an 85-62 vote (2 absent). The measure will provide taxpayer-funded education savings accounts, allowing students in public schools to attend private schools if accepted into the state's program.   Under the bill, students will receive $10,000 each year if they attend a private school.

    The suspect in the Wilmer-Hutchins High School shooting Tuesday afternoon has been taken into custody, the school district said. The Dallas Independent School District did not identify the suspect. At least four people have been hospitalized after the shooting on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said. Dallas police responded just after 1 p.m. to a shooting incident reported at Wilmer-Hutchins High School, located at 5500 Langdon Road. One student told CBS News Texas that she heard seven gunshots.

    Karmelo Anthony, the 17-year-old charged with first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of a teen at a Frisco track meet earlier this month, was released from jail on bond Monday. Earlier on Monday, Collin County judge lowered Anthony's bond from $1 million to $250,000. He will be required to wear an ankle monitor and to stay inside his parents' home. He is also not allowed on social media and cannot engage with his classmates or anything related to school.

    At least five people are injured after an explosion in an Austin neighborhood Sunday. Around 11:30 a.m., emergency crews were called to a home explosion in the 10400 block of Double Spur Loop, near DK Ranch Road, the Austin Fire Department said. Crews with Austin FD, Austin police, Austin-Travis County EMS, and the Travis County Sheriff's Office responded. Cedar Park police said a "loud boom" was heard and felt in the area, about 20 miles north of downtown Austin.

    South Florida businesses and consumers are feeling the impact of tariffs, leading to increased prices, cautious spending, and concerns about future costs for essential goods and housing.  Frank de Mir said he hasn't been selling many hats since the tariffs began. His wholesaler doubled his costs and he said he's had to pass some of that on to customers "People are holding on to their money," said de Mir. He shops at Costco for his family and said he's stocking up on items that may go up in price.
