This month, the Global Security Program at the Union of Concerned Scientists released the last UCS Satellite Database to be produced by our incredible longtime colleague, Teri Grimwood. This update, current with launches through May 1, 2023, collects 28 pieces of data on 7,560 actively-operating satellites. Over the last 18 years, Teri has produced 45 updated versions of our database. The Satellite Database has subscribers from inside and outside governments from all over the globe.

The testing of a direct-ascent anti-satellite weapon on 15 November 2021 has prompted renewed efforts in space arms control. A multilateral treaty banning all destructive anti-satellite weapon tests is urgently needed. When Russia hit its own satellite Cosmos 1408 with a ground-based missile at an altitude of 480 kilometres, it produced 1,500 pieces of trackable debris that threatened the International Space Station (ISS) and China’s Tiangong space station.

It was a 20-tonne Chinese Long March 5B rocket body passing around 60 miles overhead. Just 15 minutes later, the rocket body re-entered the atmosphere and broke into pieces, including a 12-metre-long pipe that crashed into a village in the Ivory Coast.
