The project embodies the team’s ethos of crafting functional, evocative spaces through minimal intervention for maximum impact. The home reimagines the volumes of a Spanish Mission residence for a retired couple transitioning from a sprawling family home to a more compact, single-storey space.

Before a stateside relocation, New Zealand model Georgia Fowler engaged Tigmi Design Studio to create a humble retreat for her growing family. The Byron Bay-based studio harmonised mid-century design and contemporary art to provide a nurturing interior experience for Fowler’s Sydney apartment. Tigmi Design Studio is the brainchild of Tigmi’s creative director, Danielle McEwan.

At the end of a leafy street adjoining Arakwal National Park, an existing dwelling’s internal plan – originally designed by Harley Graham Architects a decade ago – has been respectfully rearranged by Tanev Muir Architects. Yukari House achieves a delicate balance between Australian and Japanese influences, providing a greater sense of place, belonging and connection to its Byron Bay setting. The brief for Yukari House was heavily influenced by the client’s deep cultural connection to Japan.
