One side effect of MLB expanding the playoff field to 12 teams in 2022 was a big decrease in obvious trade deadline “sellers” and a big increase in the murky middle, where even sub-.500 teams can see a path to October — even if they aren’t necessarily incentivized to push all of their chips into the middle as “buyers.” With roughly five weeks until this season’s July 31 trade deadline, 21 of 30 teams began this week with playoff odds above 20 percent, according to FanGraphs, and more than...

We're less than 50 days to Major League Baseball's trade deadline - so there are less than 50 days for front offices to determine how much they like what they see, how much needs to change and how to value that change in acquisition cost. MINNEAPOLIS - Bailey Ober has always succeeded despite being one of the softest-tossing pitchers in a league increasingly dominated by big-time velocity, averaging just 91.6 mph with his fastball while posting a 3.76 ERA in 540 1/3 career innings for the Minnesota Twins since 2021. But even by those modest standards, Ober's velocity has been way down as of late. His fastball averaged 89.3 mph in Friday night's 6-4 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, his lowest mark in 101 career starts.

My last mailbag column was written two days before the Minnesota Twins started a 13-game winning streak, so the vibes have shifted considerably. At the time, the Twins were playing a nightmarish series in Cleveland, with a 13-17 record that soon became 13-20. Since then, the Twins have an MLB-best 21-8 record, turning their season around so much, so quickly that they would be hosting a first-round series if the playoffs started now. Of course, the playoffs don't start now.

After a bad start to the season and a 13-game winning streak, the Twins are firmly in playoff position. So, what questions do you have about the team and the organization? Submit them here, and Aaron Gleeman will answer a big batch in his next mailbag.
