I’ve spent an inordinate amount of time thinking about the provincial government’s boneheaded decision to spend what will likely end up being over a billion dollars on the Olympic Stadium. While I don’t agree with some that it should be demolished, I do think a better solution, and one that was never even considered, would be to find a buyer ready to spend their own money and not taxpayers’ dollars.

After hearing from radio listeners for the past 10-plus years, what I’m beginning to understand is that no matter the problem or issue raised, what seems like a simple, logical, or common-sense solution at first glance is anything but. Satisfy one person or group of people and you tick off another one. Bicycles vs cars — The current municipal administration is hellbent on its mission to build as many bike paths as it can in an apparent effort to win the title of world’s best city for cyclists.

I’m not his biggest fan, but this week I gave Denis Coderre kudos for something he did when his pre-launch campaign (he’s only 80 per cent sure he’ll run) for the leadership of the provincial Liberal party made a stop in Quebec City, in of all places the visitors’ gallery in the National Assembly. He was there to do what he does best, get attention, which he did, but what made me take notice was the nature of the attention he got.

The expression “everything old is new again” used to concern itself mainly with fashion and the fact that if you held onto anything long enough it would eventually come back in style. Sadly, that has not been the case for my paisley shirts (thank you Morrie Heft), but I’d never really considered it in the context of provincial politics, until recently when the Quebec Liberal party decided that old adage might have merit.

A recent Nanos poll that surveyed Canadians across the country discovered that heading into a new year most of us are feeling anything but optimistic about the direction the country is moving. In fact, the number of voters who expressed negative views on the federal government’s performance is at the highest it’s been since Stephen Harper was prime minister.
