    The South African delegation heading to the World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting says the country has a positive economic growth message to share, albeit with some caution over “structural issues” that need to be overcome. Trade, industry and competition minister Parks Tau said on Thursday that the mood prior to the annual meeting is “fundamentally different” this year and not only is there optimism within South Africa, the country’s global counterparts are also optimistic about its future.

    Wealthy individuals wielding excessive political power, racial and ethnic discrimination, and flawed education systems are key contributors to economic inequality, according to a Pew Research Centre report that was released this week. The survey, which spanned 36 countries across various regions, found that a median of 60% believe the political influence of the rich significantly drives inequality in their nations.

    A total of 1 564 illegal miners have resurfaced at an abandoned mine in Stilfontein in the North West and eight bodies have been retrieved, but authorities cannot confirm how many more miners remain underground.  Police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone told the Mail & Guardian that the miners have been resurfacing voluntarily from the Margaret Shaft, which is operational.  “There is a cage there, so once the security spots them underground, they go down and bring them up,” he said.

    Johannesburg Water’s intake from Rand Water will be further reduced from next month as the latter’s licence to increase extraction from the Vaal River was not approved. The municipal entity has to reduce the annual average daily demand from 1 801 megalitres a day to 1 356 by 1 September, communications officer Nolwazi Dhlamini says. Annual average daily demand is the total volume of water delivered to the system over a year, divided by 365 days.
