To say we are like Alice hurtling down the rabbit hole with no clue where we are headed would be a euphemism. We are actually in freefall into an abyss with quiet acquiescence, taking the hits with silent resignation. There is chaos and dissent in every corner and no one seems to have a grip on anything. What has been most crushing and baffling is the silence of the interim government regarding the blatant misogyny publicly displayed—in rallies, mob violence, and online propaganda.

After the shocking news of popular actor Nusraat Faria being arrested at Dhaka airport in an attempted murder case and sent to jail, she finally got bail on Tuesday. The incident has been especially jarring even in this current environment where arbitrary murder cases have been filed against hundreds of individuals thought to be sympathisers of the AL regime. Nusraat Faria has been accused in 'an attempt to murder' case along with 265 other people, 17 of them actors.

The senseless killing of Jahidul Islam Parvez, a 24-year-old student of Primeasia University, over a trivial matter encapsulates a frightening trend in our society: violence is seen as the only means of resolution to a conflict. What is scarier is the appeal of violence and brutality among young people, especially young men. The three main suspects of the murder, who have been arrested after identification through CCTV footage, and the others also in the case are in their 20s.
