It’s not uncommon for crossword puzzles to dip into local culture, and that’s exactly what’s going on with the Daily Quick clue “traditional Gaelic festival”. If you’re not familiar with Celtic traditions, this one can feel like you’ve hit a wall. I hate to admit it, but to grind through the grid and piece it together by brute force, letting the surrounding clues bail me out. You can’t really fault anyone for drawing a blank here.

If you’re dipping into the Daily Mirror Quick, you already know it’s a straight shooter when it comes to clues. Nothing too fancy, just clean and simple prompts. Every now and then, crossword clues blur the line between question and answer, and “brainpan” is a textbook case. “One who catches a person or animal” looks like an easy enough clue at first glance, but it’s got a sneaky side to it. The phrasing is so broad it can throw you off. Hunter? Trapper? Snatcher? Plenty of words might fit the bill, which is exactly why clues like this cause more second-guessing than you’d expect. When that happens, your best bet is to chip away at the surrounding answers. Let the letters fall into place and narrow down the options.

Religious Violation is one of those crossword clues that walks the line between the obvious and the frustrating. It recently popped up in The Sun Two Speed Crossword on April 27, 2025, tucked into the coffee-time side of the puzzle, with its cryptic twin reading: Wise to hide conservative anger in heresy. Now that’s a mouthful. To be fair, the coffee-time clue was doing you a favour.
