In the spring of 2020, amid pandemic pandemonium, I wrote a column meant to encourage local congregations whose weekly services had been canceled or moved online because of COVID. The gist of that piece was that a worldwide pandemic is a perfect opportunity for a church — rather, The Church (with a capital C) — to be an active presence in its community, and in general, it was well received.

This past week for spring break, our family made our first trip to a well-known golf-centric sports entertainment facility (GSEF), and it went about how I expected it to go: abysmally for me in terms of performance, but a great experience nonetheless. I remember my dad trying to teach me to golf as a kid.

I may not be an engineer like some members of my family, but there are a few residual math genes collecting dust in the deeper recesses of my memory, and every now and then, I like to dust them off and surprise people. I choose to do this at random times, but the one day a year you’ll most likely to catch me celebrating math is the day when a mathematical symbol — the Greek letter pi — is the phonetic equivalent of a baked good.
