They say it takes a village to raise a child, and whoever “they” are…they’re right. I should preface what follows by saying that most days, I am keenly aware of my inadequacies as a person and as a mom, and thank goodness for Mr. Roy and his uncanny ability to stand in where I fall short. His awareness of calendar events (this is not a sense I naturally possess), willingness to pinch hit in unexpected situations and ability to plan when I am content to “wing it” make us a great team.

Confession: It’s our fault — Mr. Roy’s and mine, but somehow, I think it's probably more mine — this day didn’t come sooner, and in retrospect, I can’t decide whether that was a subtle effort on the part of my subconsciousness or purely an accident, or a little bit of both.

One weekend not long ago, I was sitting in the bleachers at the ice rink when a friend shared about a free app she'd been using to learn German in order to communicate with her family’s housekeeper. It wasn’t the first time I’d heard about this app, but I'm ashamed to say I immediately filed her comments in my mental folder labeled "inapplicable" because I assumed that at almost 40, I’m too old to be learning new languages.
